The Jerry Johns Basic Reading Inventory, 12th edition is an informal reading assessment designed specifically for teachers to help evaluate students’ reading levels. It includes a series of leveled word lists and passages for students to read, making it an effective screening tool as well as a way to track progress throughout the year. The inventory helps educators determine a student’s instructional, independent, and frustration reading levels, as well as their listening levels based on speed, accuracy, and comprehension. With APH adaptations in both large print (18-point font with added white space for magnification tools) and braille (available in both contracted and uncontracted formats to allow teachers to switch between codes as needed), the inventory is accessible for students of all visual abilities. The data obtained from this inventory plays a critical role in determining the most effective literacy modalities for students with visual impairments.
